One more outer space-themed holiday song ahead of this month’s big planetary conjunction. In this one, put together by Lawrence Welk and sung by Howlin’ Mad Murdock’s favorite singers, The Lennon Sisters, Santa Claus decided in the 50s to move his whole operation away from the North Pole so he can provide toys to kids in outer space. Did he come back the following year after realizing how hard it was to send toys all that way?
I do like how the song says Santa is now making toys for kids off-Earth, but it specifically points out he doesn’t need to go to Mars, because they have their own Santa and “won’t be needing ours.” Are they perhaps making reference to “Zoomah, The Santa Claus From Mars” in the Barry Gordon song?
