This is from Dipole Moment’s demo, recorded on a four-track in late 1992 at James Wold’s house. It was, I think, the first song we recorded together, though the four-track could only record two channels at a time so we didn’t all record together. We did bass and drums for each track first; guitar and voice came later. This was the song people in our high school knew us for, so to be rebels in our own minds, we had to immediately stop playing it at shows.
Oh, and I hereby apologize for the “Oedipus complex” line here. I was sixteen and already writing dad jokes, which tells you everything you need to know about me.
You can’t change the world
You can’t change a thing
How could you even think so
It’s all a stupid game
Things are moving too fast
You can’t catch up to them
You count up all the problems and you
Worry about them all again
Some sort of comfort for you
To know you’ve got nothing left to do
But now there’s nothing left for you
Well who’s the one to guess
And who’s the one to check?
You’re the kind of person who made
Oedipus so complex
I’ll check around the corners
Check around the walls
But I guess to you it doesn’t
Mean anything at all
Some sort of comfort for you
To know you’ve got nothing left to do
But now there’s nothing left for you
